We decided to slip away from Aspen for a long off-season weekend in Telluride, so we loaded up the Jeep and headed over McClure Pass...

Driving through the small western slope ranching towns of Paonia, Delta, & Montrose we passed wonderful old movie theaters.

The Paradise Theatre in Paonia. The Tru-Vu Drive-In in Delta. The Egyptian Theatre in Delta. The Fox Theatre in Montrose.

Since it was the off-season, the nicest hotel in town was virtually giving rooms away (on Friday night we were one of three guests at the hotel) -- so we had an ultra-comfy base from which to explore the charming old mining town of Telluride and the charm-free modern condo-cluster development of Mountain Village.

On Saturday morning we drove over  mountains to the mining town of Silverton. High up in the rugged hills above town, we explored around the recently-closed Sunnyside gold mine.

Then we headed back over the sharp hairpin turns of Red Mountain Pass, past abandoned remnants of ghost towns and enormous mining operations.

At the base of the pass is the small town of Ouray, which bills itself as "the Switzerland of America".

...and then it was Monday morning, and time to head for home. The drive down through the Uncompahgre National Forest to Ridgeway was spectacular under the bright morning sun.
